Does Sealing Extend the Life of My Concrete Slab?
The honest answer for a typical, well-poured residential slab in Melbourne is: not in a way you’ll notice structurally.
A properly poured concrete slab, built on the right base for the ground conditions and the loads it carries, can last 50 years or more whether it is sealed or not.
Sealing does not make weak concrete strong. It does not stop cracking. It does not physically lock exposed aggregate stones into the slab against tyre friction, turning vehicles or long-term wear.
What sealing does is protect the surface appearance and slow down weathering of the exposed surface.
The 50-Year Cost Question
For a standard 56 m² driveway, the numbers can be surprising.
Option A – Heavy resealing schedule
Most sealer manufacturers recommend resealing every 2–3 years. Using the upper end of that guidance (every 3 years) over a 50‑year period, you could spend around $18,750 in today’s dollars.
Option B – Never seal it and replace later
Let the driveway age naturally and replace it after 50 years with new exposed aggregate concrete. At around $140/m², plus excavation and removal costs, replacement may sit around $10,000–$12,000.
The point is not that everyone should plan a 50-year replacement today. The point is that aggressive resealing schedules can easily cost more than full replacement over the long term.
That is why sealing should be viewed honestly: you are paying to protect the finish, colour and cleanability — not buying structural insurance for the slab.

So What Does Sealing Actually Do?
Sealing protects the immediate surface of the concrete.
Unsealed concrete will generally:
- fade faster from UV exposure
- absorb oil, leaf stains and dirt more easily
- develop tyre marks and grime faster
- become harder to clean over time
- lose its fresh appearance sooner
Sealed concrete will generally:
- hold its richer colour for longer
- resist many common stains better
- stay easier to wash and maintain
- slow surface wear from weather and exposure
- keep decorative finishes looking sharper for longer
These are real benefits. They just need to be understood properly.
Exposed Aggregate: Does Sealer Lock the Stones In?
No. This is where people are often misled.
Sealer does not glue exposed aggregate stones permanently into place. It cannot physically stop stones from dislodging if the surface cement paste around them wears away, or if the concrete was poorly placed, over-exposed, under-cured or heavily abused.
Turning tyres, vehicle traffic, weather exposure and time all still affect the surface.
What sealer can do is help protect the cement paste at the surface, which is the material holding the aggregate in place. By slowing UV damage, moisture absorption, staining and general surface degradation, sealing can help the exposed aggregate surface stay in better condition for longer.
So the honest version is this:
Sealer does not lock in stone. It protects the surface that holds the stone.
That difference matters.
What Happens If You Never Seal Exposed Aggregate?
If exposed aggregate is never sealed, it can still remain structurally sound for decades. It just won’t look the same.
A realistic lifecycle may look like this:
Years 0–20
Little to no meaningful stone loss if the concrete was properly poured and cured. The slab remains structurally sound, but the colour will fade and the surface will stain more easily.
Years 20–30
The surface paste may gradually soften and wear. Individual stones may begin to dislodge in patches, especially in high-traffic turning areas. Cosmetic patching may be possible if matching aggregate is available.
Years 30+
Stone loss can become more widespread and the surface may look patchy, faded and rougher. Local repairs become less effective. The slab may still be perfectly usable as a driveway, but it no longer looks or feels like it did when first poured.
When Is Sealing Worth It?
Sealing is worth it if you care about how the concrete looks and how easy it is to maintain.
It makes sense for:
- exposed aggregate driveways
- coloured concrete
- decorative resurfacing
- stencil concrete
- slate impression finishes
- pool surrounds
- high-visibility entertaining areas
- homes where the driveway affects street appeal
It may not be worth it for plain grey concrete in a hidden area, shed slab, rear path or side access where appearance does not matter.
Why do manufacturers recommend resealing every 2–3 years?
Most product manufacturers publish maintenance schedules that assume the most demanding conditions:
- full sun
- heavy traffic
- harsh weather
- minimal maintenance.
Those recommendations are intentionally conservative and are designed to keep the coating performing across a wide range of situations.
Real-world residential driveways don’t all experience those conditions.
Some genuinely need attention after only a couple of years.
Others continue performing well for much longer.
That’s why we don’t believe resealing should be based solely on the calendar.
Inspect the driveway, not the date
Every driveway ages differently.
A north-facing driveway with constant vehicle traffic will wear differently to a shaded driveway that only sees two cars each day.
Rather than automatically recommending resealing after a set period, we inspect the condition of the existing sealer.
If it’s still protecting the surface properly, we’ll tell you.
If it’s reached the end of its service life, we’ll recommend resealing.
It’s that simple.

Sealing is a surface-protection and appearance choice, not a structural necessity for most well-built residential concrete slabs in Melbourne.
If you want your driveway to stay looking closer to the day it was poured — richer colour, fewer stains, easier cleaning and slower surface weathering — sealing and sensible periodic resealing are worth it.
If you only care that you have a solid piece of concrete to park on, and you don’t mind a faded, stained, more weathered look over time, you can choose not to seal and accept the cosmetic trade-off.

How to Check Your Sealer: The 30-Second Water Test
You don’t need a calendar to tell you when to reseal; you just need a cup of water. Pour a small amount onto a high-traffic area of your driveway:
• If it beads up or rolls away, your sealer is still doing its job. Save your money.
• If the concrete darkens quickly and drinks the water, the protective barrier has worn away.
Sealing does serve a function. We offer it because it protects the surface, improves cleanability and helps decorative concrete hold its appearance — but we do not recommend resealing unless the concrete actually needs it.
Does Sealing Stop Water Ingress and Prevent Concrete Cancer?
No—not by itself. Sealing protects the surface of concrete, but it doesn’t stop the moisture that causes concrete cancer.
Concrete cancer occurs when moisture and oxygen reach the steel reinforcement inside a slab. As the steel rusts, it expands, cracking and lifting the concrete from within. By the time you see cracks or flaking on the surface, the corrosion has often been developing for years.
A concrete sealer only protects the exposed surface. Water can still enter from the sides, underneath the slab, through expansion joints, or from poor site drainage. No surface sealer can prevent moisture reaching the reinforcement through these pathways.
The biggest factors that determine whether concrete develops concrete cancer are:
- Adequate concrete cover over the reinforcing steel.
- Proper drainage around the slab.
- A well-compacted base.
- Quality construction practices.
When these are done correctly, a concrete slab can last for many decades with little risk of reinforcement corrosion.
That doesn’t mean sealing isn’t worthwhile. A quality concrete sealer helps protect against:
- Oil and stain penetration.
- UV fading.
- Surface wear.
- Weathering.
- Easier ongoing cleaning and maintenance.
Sealing is an excellent maintenance practice, but it shouldn’t be marketed as a solution that prevents concrete cancer. If someone claims sealing alone will stop concrete cancer, they’re oversimplifying how concrete deterioration actually occurs.
Does New Concrete Need Sealing?
Yes — new concrete should be cured or sealed on day one with the correct product. Concrete does not gain strength by simply drying out; it gains strength through hydration, which needs moisture. If fresh concrete is left unprotected and loses moisture too quickly, it may only reach around half of its intended strength.
That is why we recommend same-day curing or sealing for new concrete where suitable. The goal is to help lock in moisture during the early curing stage, reduce shrinkage cracking, improve surface hardness and help the concrete reach its proper long-term strength.
The product matters. Plain concrete, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate and decorative finishes may all require different curing or sealing systems, so the right approach depends on the finish and future use of the surface.
Is Concrete Resurfacing just a Band-Aid Solution?
It depends entirely on what’s wrong with the slab — and this is where the “band-aid” label gets misused.
On a structurally sound slab, resurfacing is not a band-aid. A polymer-modified overlay bonds chemically and mechanically to the existing concrete, and when properly prepared and applied, the result is a unified surface — not a patch sitting on top. Professionally installed resurfacing on a sound slab regularly lasts 15 to 20+ years.
The “band-aid” criticism is valid in a couple of specific situations: when resurfacing is applied over a slab that has active structural problems — deep cracking from subsidence, heaving from reactive clay movement, or a base that was never properly compacted. In those cases, the overlay will reflect or repeat the failure of the slab beneath it, and no amount of surface treatment will change that outcome. Products not mixed correctly or applied to thin will also give people justification to consider it a band-aid solution but this comes down to the applicator, not the product.
The honest answer is this: resurfacing fixes surface problems — wear, fading, cosmetic cracking, spalling, and loss of finish. It doesn’t fix structural problems. If we assess your slab and find structural issues, we’ll tell you — because resurfacing over an unsound base isn’t something we’re willing to put our name on.
When the slab is right, resurfacing is one of the most cost-effective decisions a homeowner can make. A full replacement runs $120–$200/m² all-in after demolition. Resurfacing runs $50–$130/m² and is done in 1–3 days with no jackhammers, no skip bins, and not as much disruption.
