Resurfacing keeps your existing slab and refreshes the look. New concrete replaces the slab entirely. The cost difference is significant — resurfacing typically 40–60% less.
Signs your slab needs replacement, not resurfacing
Wide structural cracking running through the full thickness of the slab, sections that have shifted on the base, expansion joints that have failed and let water in, surface concrete crumbling away in chunks — these are signs the slab is past resurfacing.
Resurfacing as the cheaper option
If the existing slab is structurally sound but visually tired, a resurface in spray-on, slate impression, stencil or Timbercrete is usually cheaper and faster than tearing out and pouring new.
Coloured concrete options
Coloured concrete is poured with the colour mixed through the slab rather than applied to the surface. The benefit over a surface stain is that the colour goes all the way through — small chips and surface wear don’t reveal a different colour underneath.

Do I need a permit?
Residential driveway pours inside the property usually don’t need a permit, but vehicle crossover work onto the council nature strip usually does.
Will the colour fade over time?
All outdoor coatings can change over time with sun, wear and cleaning. A proper sealer helps protect the colour, and resealing every 2–5 years keeps the surface looking better and helps stop it drying out or wearing unevenly.
Can oil stains be removed before resurfacing?
Some oil staining can be cleaned and treated, but heavy oil that has soaked deep into the concrete can still cause issues. I’ll check it on site and tell you whether it needs extra prep, grinding, degreasing, or whether that section is too contaminated to coat properly.
How long does a new concrete pour take?
Most residential driveway jobs are 2–7 days on site. Light foot traffic typically possible 24–48 hours after the pour; vehicle traffic about a week.
