About the Owner
Shaun is a hands-on operator who takes pride in transforming outdoor spaces. After spending 8 years in painting and decorating, he joined the Royal Australian Navy before eventually returning to the trade. Over time, traditional painting no longer felt like the right fit, which led him into epoxy flooring—particularly metallic epoxy—where he could combine durability with creativity.
That shift eventually led to the purchase of Nupave. The business stood out as a natural progression, especially given the foundation built by the previous owner, Phillip, whose passion for the industry aligned with Shaun’s own approach.
Since taking over, Shaun has focused on refining and expanding the finishes Nupave offers. This includes developing more specialised options such as Timbercrete and slate impression concrete resurfacing—both designed to deliver a high-end result without the need for full concrete replacement.
A key part of how Nupave operates is simple: not every job should be done. If resurfacing isn’t the right solution, Shaun will say so. The goal is long-term results, not short-term sales. That’s also why Nupave has introduced maintenance registers, helping clients stay on top of resealing and pressure cleaning to protect their investment over time.
Rather than trying to be a one-stop shop that does everything at an average standard, Nupave focuses on doing a few things properly—concrete resurfacing, concrete sealing and epoxy flooring.
At the same time, understanding the surface underneath is just as important as the finish itself. Shaun has spent time learning the structural side of concrete so issues can be identified early, not covered up. When resurfacing isn’t suitable, he works with a trusted concrete crew to organise proper replacement—ensuring clients get the right outcome, not just the most convenient one.
If you’re unsure whether your concrete needs resurfacing or replacement, we’re happy to inspect and give you honest advice.
What You Can Expect Working With Me
When you contact Nupave, you’re not getting a quick quote without understanding the job properly. Every project starts with an on-site inspection so we can assess the condition of your concrete and talk through the best options.
You’ll get clear advice on whether resurfacing is suitable or if another approach would be better. We’ll walk you through finishes, explain how the process works, and make sure you know exactly what you’re getting before any work begins.
Preparation is a big part of what we do. The surface is cleaned, repaired, and prepared properly before any coating goes down. From there, we focus on delivering a finish that not only looks good but is built to last.
What We Don’t Do
We don’t take on jobs that shouldn’t be resurfaced. If your concrete isn’t suitable, we’ll tell you.
We don’t rush preparation just to get more jobs through. Most failures in this industry come down to poor prep, and that’s not something we cut corners on.
We don’t recommend full replacement unless it’s actually needed. If your concrete can be brought back to life, we’ll show you how.
And we don’t aim to be a one-stop shop doing everything at an average standard. We focus on doing concrete resurfacing, concrete sealing and epoxy flooring properly.
Why I Created the Nupave Help Centre
The help centre was created so people have a reliable source to visit to see if we have covered an issue they are currently facing. Some of the topics are of things people my be able to do themselves, it isnt about teasing you with a little information which requires you to employ our services to finish off what we didn’t show. While some repairs still require professional involvement, we believe homeowners should have access to reliable information about what to look for, how to identify problems and when resurfacing may or may not be the right option.
Fixing Problems, Not Covering Them
A lot of the work we come across involves surfaces that were previously resurfaced without the right preparation or applied over concrete that should have been replaced.
That leads to peeling, cracking, and coatings failing much sooner than they should.
Our approach is to identify those issues before any work begins. If there are structural problems, movement, or underlying issues, they’re addressed first. If resurfacing isn’t the right option, we’ll point you in the right direction instead of covering it up.
Experience & Approach
With a background in painting, epoxy flooring, and decorative concrete, Shaun brings both technical knowledge and a focus on finish to every job.
Nupave works across residential and commercial projects, from driveways and patios to larger commercial spaces. Over time, the focus has shifted toward more specialised finishes like Timbercrete, cut stone and slate impression concrete rersurfacing, offering something different to standard resurfacing.
Understanding the surface underneath is just as important as the finish itself. That’s why time has been spent learning the structural side of concrete, not just the coating that goes on top.
Honest Advice, Long-Term Results
Not every job is a resurfacing job, and that’s something we’re upfront about.
If resurfacing isn’t going to last, we won’t recommend it. Instead, we can organise new concrete through trusted crews and guide you on the best approach for your situation.
We’ve also introduced maintenance registers for resealing and pressure cleaning, helping clients keep their surfaces in good condition long after the job is finished.
If you’re not sure whether your concrete needs resurfacing or replacement, we’re happy to take a look and give you honest advice on the best way forward.
Expert Concrete Assessment and Resurfacing Services
Not every worn concrete surface needs resurfacing—and not every contractor will tell you that.
At Nupave, we take a selective approach to concrete resurfacing in Melbourne. Before recommending any treatment, we assess whether your existing concrete is structurally sound enough to support an overlay system. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you directly. Pushing a resurfacing solution onto a failing slab creates short-term results and long-term problems—something we’re not interested in.
Our focus is on honest evaluation and long-term durability. That means identifying when concrete driveway resurfacing makes sense, when concrete sealing alone may be sufficient, and when full concrete replacement is the only responsible path forward.
Why Proper Concrete Resurfacing Matters
There’s a significant difference between cosmetic cover-ups and structural resurfacing. A thin coating over damaged surfaces might look acceptable for a few months, but without proper surface preparation and substrate repair, delamination, cracking, and peeling become inevitable.
When concrete resurfacing is done correctly on an appropriate slab, the benefits are substantial:
-
Cost-Effectiveness: Concrete resurfacing is typically 50 to 70 percent less expensive than full slab replacement, making it a practical option for property owners looking to restore worn concrete without the expense and disruption of demolition.
-
Extended Performance: Properly applied overlays using polymer-modified cement offer enhanced durability against stains, weather-related damage, and daily wear compared to standard concrete.
-
Safety Improvements: Modern finishes for resurfaced concrete can achieve a P5 slip rating, making them suitable for wet areas such as pools, steep driveways, and commercial spaces where moisture creates hazards.
-
Weather Resistance: Melbourne contractors employ specialized techniques to manage the city’s variable climate in concrete resurfacing projects, ensuring materials cure correctly and bond properly despite temperature fluctuations.
The difference between a resurfacing project that lasts 10–15 years and one that fails within two often comes down to preparation quality and honest assessment of the existing slab.

Our Professional Assessment and Resurfacing Process
Step 1: Comprehensive Surface Evaluation
Every project begins with detailed assessment of concrete condition and substrate integrity. We look for visible cracks, settlement, reinforcement corrosion, moisture issues, and signs of movement that indicate whether resurfacing is appropriate.
We document areas requiring repair versus replacement and provide honest evaluation of expected outcomes. If your old concrete isn’t suitable for resurfacing, we’ll explain why and discuss alternatives.
Step 2: Surface Preparation and Repair
Poor preparation causes most resurfacing failures. Our process includes:
-
High Pressure Cleaning: Removal of dirt, oil, grease, and contaminants that prevent proper adhesion.
-
Crack Repair: Stabilization of cracks and substrate defects before overlay application.
-
Moisture Testing: Assessment of moisture content and drainage to prevent future issues.
-
Surface Profiling: Diamond grinding or shotblasting to create optimal mechanical bond between the existing slab and resurfacing material.
High-pressure washing and crack repair are critical preparatory steps in the concrete resurfacing process that many contractors rush or skip entirely.
Step 3: System Application
-
Application of primers and bonding agents for maximum adhesion to the existing concrete.
-
Professional installation of chosen resurfacing system by experienced technicians.
-
Quality control throughout application, monitoring thickness, texture, and colour consistency.
-
Environmental condition monitoring to ensure proper curing despite Melbourne’s variable temperatures.
Step 4: Finishing and Protection
-
Application of protective sealers and topcoats matched to the surface’s intended use.
-
Non slip finishes applied where required for safety compliance.
-
Controlled curing process—in Melbourne, resurfacing is generally ready for foot traffic within 24 hours after application.
-
Final quality inspection and documentation of completed work.
Step 5: Maintenance Education and Support
Proper sealing and maintenance determine how long your resurfaced concrete will perform. We provide:
-
Detailed maintenance instructions covering cleaning methods and schedules.
-
Re-sealing recommendations—re-sealing resurfaced concrete surfaces every 3–5 years is recommended to prevent moisture penetration and UV damage.
-
Realistic long-term performance expectations based on your specific application.
-
Ongoing support and warranty information for peace of mind.
Common Questions About Concrete Resurfacing
When is concrete unsuitable for resurfacing?
Resurfacing isn’t appropriate when the underlying slab has structural issues that an overlay cannot address. Signs that indicate replacement rather than resurfacing include:
-
Cracks wider than 2mm that continue to move
-
Settlement or heaving causing uneven surfaces
-
Reinforcement corrosion visible through spalling
-
Widespread delamination or hollow areas under the surface
-
Severe ponding from incorrect falls that overlays cannot correct
In Melbourne, common signs that indicate the need for concrete resurfacing include visible cracks, pitting, fading, and general surface wear—but these must be evaluated individually to determine if the existing slab can support a new surface.
How long should properly resurfaced concrete last?
Service life depends on the system chosen and maintenance provided:
-
Thin spray-on finishes: 8–12 years
-
Polymer micro-toppings: 10–15 years
-
Standard polymer overlays: 12–20 years
-
Thicker decorative overlays with exposed aggregate or stamped concrete patterns: 15–25 years
Factors affecting longevity include preparation quality, traffic load, exposure to UV and chemicals, and maintenance discipline.
What maintenance is required after resurfacing?
-
Regular sweeping and cleaning with mild detergent
-
Avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and excessive high-pressure washing
-
Re-sealing according to schedule—typically every 3–5 years for most resurfacing projects
-
Monitoring for cracks and addressing issues promptly before they expand
Concrete sealing is essential for protecting surfaces from moisture, stains, and wear, extending the lifespan of concrete floors significantly.
How do you determine if resurfacing is worth the investment?
We help you evaluate:
-
Total Cost Comparison: The average cost for concrete resurfacing in Melbourne ranges from $50 to $120 per square metre, depending on the scope and finish. Full replacement typically costs 2.5 to 3 times more.
-
Substrate Condition: Hidden costs in concrete resurfacing projects can arise from unexpected substrate repairs, additional sealing, or council permits for public-facing works. Proper assessment identifies these upfront.
-
Lifecycle Analysis: Resurfacing that lasts 15 years at half the cost of replacement provides excellent value. Resurfacing that fails in two years because the slab was unsuitable provides none.
We provide transparent pricing without hidden fees, based on honest assessment rather than what you might want to hear.
